Seniors News - July 2016

BGA Seniors -
The BGA Seniors team have continued to enjoy a good season and entertained Turton Seniors at Deane on Tuesday 12th July before the return fixture at Turton on Thursday 28th July.

Tony Ashton who looks after the BGA team is keen to recruit more senior players and would welcome anyone who has not yet played for the team to sign up and get involved. A cost of £10 per person for home and away fixtures is very good value for a two course meal and a game of golf with no green fee when playing away from home. If you have not yet played have a look at the Seniors Notice Board or speak directly to Tony. BGA matches are played as "friendlies" with an age limit of 55 years and unlike the Red Rose there is no league involved. Maximum 28 handicap is applicable.

Red Rose League -
The Red Rose team continues to do well remaining unbeaten at home and picking up some useful points in our away fixtures. The most up to date league table puts Deane at the top however the team have some difficult matches ahead.

Results in June -
Bury 10 - Deane 4                       Deane 13 - Chorley 1
Deane 8 - Bolton Old Links 5     Darwen 9 - Deane 5
Two more home games against Leyland and Fishwick Hall
give the Red Rose team a great opportunity to continue their winning ways at home.

Seniors Away Day -
Following the "exchange" with Ashton-in-Makerfield GC last year we have been asked by some of our members if the Exchange is being repeated. Unfortunately because of problems with the numbers coming to Deane last year we are unable to do so. We have however negotiated a very good deal with Ashton GC who are offering a package of a £16pp green fee plus £10 for a two course meal. We would need to top that up to cover the cost of prizes and think a figure of £30pp would be required. If you are interested in joining in an "away" day in September please place you name on the appropriate notice displayed on the Seniors Notice Board in the main foyer. If there is sufficient interest we will try and arranged a date, yet to be confirmed, in September.

Seniors Open - Tuesday 26th July.
We are almost fully subscribed for this event and hope the weather is kind to us on the day. The Seniors Committee met early in July and provisionally decided to donate a figure of £1200 to the club which will be added to the "Car Park Fund." Thank you to all senior members who have supported this competition.

Seniors News - May 2016

BGA & Red Rose team updates -

Our BGA team has enjoyed a good start to the season with return fixtures against Bolton Lostock and Regent Park. In June we entertain Westhoughton on Thursday 9th June before the return match on Tuesday 21st June. In July we entertain Turton on Tuesday the 12th and visit Turton for the return on Thursday the 28th. Tony Ashton our BGA Seniors Captain is keen to have a strong squad to choose from so if you are available to play on any of the previously mentioned dates do not hesitate to put your name down on the availability sheet that is on the Seniors Notice Board.

The Red Rose team has also made a good start to their season. With four matches away and only three at home played to date the team improved their league position with an away win at Knott End taking them to second place behind Leyland who top the league.

Red Rose Team results can be found on the Seniors Section page.

Seniors News April 2016

Seniors Opening Day – Tuesday 5th April.

Thanks to all who took part and braved the windy conditions. They certainly affected the scoring with John Deary taking first place and the Claret Jug with a total of 37points. Second place went to Brian Taylor who we welcome as one of our new members scoring a commendable 35 points and just edged out Frank Hodgkiss also with 35points who lost out on a CPO. Roland Makin and Ron Fletcher attended the meal and presentation of prizes as our honoured guests and with a total of 188years between them they have continued to support the Seniors Section and will always be welcome at our events.

BGA News –
Tony Ashton leads our BGA team for the first time with an away game at Bolton Golf Club on Monday 11th April and hosts the return at Deane on Tuesday 19th. Please do your best to support the team if you can. To play local courses for £10 with a two course meal thrown in is very good value. Watch the Seniors Notice Board for future fixtures and sign up if you are available.

Red Rose League –
Ian Parsons takes on the Captaincy of the team this season and begins with an away fixture at Fishwick Hall on Tuesday 19th April with our first home match on Thursday25th when Bury GC are the visitors. We have had to re arrange the Fishwick Hall match because the original date clashed with our Seniors Open Competition in July. Unfortunately Fishwick could only offer us the April date.
Another significant change within the Red Rose League is the change of rule regarding “Dress Code.” It has been agreed that the rule of the home club will apply with regard to dress in the clubhouse after play. Deane’s ruling is that smart casual wear will be acceptable without the need to wear jacket and tie but all players must have a change from their on- course dress before dining.
Five clubs have retained the collar and tie rule and Deane members will be expected to honour this rule when playing these away fixtures.

Our closing day brought another successful season to its close. Our senior teams did themselves proud both in the way they played their matches and also in the manner in which they welcomed our visitors to the club. We look forward to another enjoyable season in 2016 when Tony Ashton will look after our BGA Seniors and Ian Parsons will Captain the Red Rose Team.

On behalf of the Seniors Section we extend our thanks and best wishes to Geoffrey Blandthorn for his commitment, support and service to Deane Golf Club and in particularly the BGA Seniors Team.

Red Rose and BGA Team News --

Our Red Rose team continue to hold their own with a creditable fourth place in the league table despite a reverse at Darwen. A good home win at home against Chorley kept us just ahead of Darwen in the table. Good performances in our next match, home against Leyland on Thursday and the final two games of the season against Fishwick Hall should ensure the team finish in their highest position for some years.

A Big Thank You --

The BGA team has been successfully managed by that gentleman of Deane Golf Club, Jeffrey Blandthorn, for as long as I for one can remember and it is with regret that you should all know that he feels now is the time to take a break from what has been a very rewarding but in more recent tiems quite a testing time for him. We are all indebted to Jeffrey for his dedicated efforts over so many years and the Seniors Committee will make sure that the BGA Seniors Team continues to fulfill all their fixtures in future years. Jeffrey will continue to manage the team for their final two fixtures when they round-off their season with home and away matches against Westhoughtom.
